Wrightsville Beach refuses to release officers' names

The town of Wrightsville Beach is refusing to release the names of three police officers placed on paid administrative leave, despite a state law that makes any changes in an employee's status a matter of public record.


The town's board of aldermen took no action on the matter Thursday, after a closed session in which Police Chief Dan House updated the board on the status of an investigation that began in mid-December.

Teen says police officer put dog feces in mailbox

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A teen charged with assaulting Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Captain Charles Adkins says he caught Adkins putting dog feces in a friend’s mailbox and that’s what started the fight.


 

CMPD is now investigating Capt. Adkins and his actions before that confrontation, as well as conducting a criminal investigation into his assault.  Adkins was off-duty at the time.

Police beating in Bryson City leads to $22,500 settlement

A mentally ill man got a $22,500 settlement in a lawsuit against a Bryson City police officer who hit him multiple times with a baton and sprayed him with pepper spray.


The settlement came more than three years after the incident, which involved a 25-year-old with schizophrenia. The man sustained physical injuries and mental trauma after a Bryson City police officer hit the man repeatedly with a baton while serving involuntary commitment papers on him outside a downtown pizz...

CMPD won't detail up to $25 million in DNC-related equipment purchases

In preparation for the Democratic National Convention, the city of Charlotte is expected to buy up to $25 million of new police equipment that could impact for years how officers do their jobs.


Other cities that have hosted political conventions have disclosed their purchases, including surveillance cameras, armored vehicles and non-lethal guns that fire pepper-spray-filled balls.

Former Benson police officer charged with stealing evidence

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A former Benson Police Officer was charged this week with stealing evidence and obstruction of justice.


The two-count felony indictment says Randall William Beasley "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did steal evidence, $850 dollars in United States Currency, relevant to a criminal offense and court proceeding."


By stealing the money, the indictment says Beasley "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did obstruct justice."

Police officer charged with DWI

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law.


Authorities said Officer Matthew U'Ren was driving his car on Camden Road early Friday morning when he crashed near the intersection of Camden Road and Whitfield Street.


They said the 25-year-old officer called a towing company and had his car towed from the scene without notifying authorities.

Two Thomasville police officers improperly euthanized wounded dog, state officials say

Two Thomasville police officers have been "counseled" by their superiors after they improperly euthanized a wounded dog, which had been shot by one of the officers after it charged him.


The incident happened nearly six weeks ago at the Davidson County Animal Shelter in Lexington. The two officers, who are not certified euthanasia technicians, were not allowed to under state law to put the animal to death.
